First Annual Annie M. Cleggett Community Service Award

In its 10th anniversary, Y.W.E.C. introduces its first scholarship for teen girls, the Annie M. Cleggett Community Service Award. This award is for teen female students who are current high school seniors. Named in honor of the grandmother of Founder/Executive Director Chianti Cleggett, this award pays homage to the spirit of service to one's community. Annie M. Cleggett believed in serving the Birmingham community through her church, her neighborhood and throughout the city. The recipient of this scholarship must have attended Y.W.E.C. for at least two years and have at least 100 hours of community service over the past 24 months.
Recipient will receive the $500 award upon verification of college admission/enrollment for the 2018-2019 school year. 


How can you apply? 

1) Submit a 500-word typed essay answering the following questions: 
How has volunteering exposed you to people of diverse backgrounds and opened your mind to different ways of living, thinking, creating and connecting? What would you create to make life better for any of the groups you served through volunteering?    
2) List the organizations you have volunteered with, duties completed and positions held, for the 100 hours of service. Be sure to include your name, address, school, class and contact email and phone number.
3) Submit two signed letters of recommendation from a mentor, guidance counselor or service organization supervisor detailing your leadership qualities and examples of how your service has positively impacted an organization or group. Must include: length of relationship, actual pen/ink signature, email and phone number.

Empowered Young Woman Service Award

This award is for young women in college who are dedicated to service and empowerment. The recipient must have attended Y.W.E.C. for at least two years. She must: have completed at least 100 hours of community service over the past 24 months; have held at least one leadership position in a service organization in college; be enrolled as a college sophomore, junior or senior for the 2018-2019 school year in a college/university working towards a degree.   
Recipient will receive the $500 award upon verification of college enrollment for the 2018-2019 school year. 


How can you apply? 

1) Submit a 500-word typed essay answering the following questions: 
How has serving the community become an essential part of having a well-rounded life for you? As an Empowered Young Woman, how will you continue to create a life that uplifts and inspires others?
2) List the organizations you have volunteered with, duties completed and positions held, for the 100 hours of service. Be sure to include your name, address, college/university, class status and contact email and phone number.
